Urgent PostgreSQL Row? Escalate to Slack Immediately

This n8n workflow flags any high-priority PostgreSQL row and has Slack post an alert to a Slack channel right away, so nothing important sits unread.

difficulty Beginnersetup 15 minresult A hands-off n8n workflow where every relevant PostgreSQL row automatically reaches Slack — post an alert to a Slack channel.
  1. 1

    Fetch PostgreSQL data

Add an HTTP Request node (or the native PostgreSQL node if you have credentials set up) and point it at the PostgreSQL API. Poll PostgreSQL for new rows and filter for urgency. Add a Schedule Trigger before it if this recipe runs on a timer, or a Webhook node if PostgreSQL can push events directly.

  2. 2

Shape the data with a Set node

Add a Set node after the fetch step to pull out the fields you need — e.g. id, title (or name), status, and updated_at from the PostgreSQL row. This keeps the rest of the workflow clean and readable.

  3. 3

    Send it to Slack

Add a Slack node set to operation Send Message. Connect your workspace, choose the Channel, and build the message Text from the Set-node fields.

  4. 4

    Activate and test

Click Activate in the top-right corner. Trigger a real row in PostgreSQL (or run the workflow manually against existing data) and confirm it lands correctly in Slack. Once verified, this runs hands-off.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to code anything?

No. n8n is a visual, drag-and-drop builder. You connect your PostgreSQL and Slack accounts, map the fields, and activate — no code required.

Where do I get my PostgreSQL API credentials?

In your PostgreSQL account settings, look for "API", "Developers" or "Integrations" and generate an API key or token. Paste it into n8n's HTTP Request node (as a header or credential) or the native PostgreSQL node if one is available.

Can I filter which items trigger this workflow?

Yes. Add an `IF` node after the Set node with a condition on any field (status, amount, tag, etc.). Wire the TRUE branch to the Slack step and leave FALSE empty to skip the rest.
